The Agency of Visible Women Reading Group: Graphic Novel Reading Group Pt 1

A reading group for people who love reading but find it hard to read - for whatever reason.

A reading group with fun, laughter and pictures.

A reading group for people who love comics and feminism and who appreciate how the two can educate, and share knowledge in an accessible way.

A reading group facilitated by a queer, dyslexic, dyspraxic with a short attention span who loves short stories, comic books and intersectional feminism.

Long has the graphic novel been maligned, associated with being immature, geeky, with nothing to be learned from.

This reading group centres the graphic novel as a tool for learning and self development. In a society whose education is so out of touch with the people living in it, how important is the graphic novel: for representation, social learning, womxns empowerment and academic learning when we consider the gaps left by a patriarchal education system?

I won't dictate a formula, perhaps we'll read aloud our favourite parts, dissect the images; laugh at the ability to escape for one hot minute! Let’s see where the mood takes us.

A selection of novels will be up for discussion, feel free to bring your favourites! A focus will be placed on Persepolis as a truly groundbreaking work as well as the slightly more light hearted, but equally important Women World and Coyote Dog Girl. You don't have to have read the books before hand, we will send out some excerpts so you can get a taste.

That's it, it'll be like a Fosse production without an overbearing Male choreographer! (There'll likely be very little dancing and singing at all actually, but I'm not ruling it out).

This group welcomes all womxn, queer people, femmes and non binary people who love nothing more than to get their teeth into a graphic novel, or those who want to give it a try!

The Old Waterworks has large print copies of the texts, step free access and parking available. If you have any further access needs please contact us and we will do our best to accommodate you.

The Agency of Visible Women aims to be a safe space. We are founded on the belief that you do not have to justify your existence or worth as a human. We will not be reduced to gender binary stereotypes and we will not tolerate: Racism, Classism, Homophobia, Ableism, Transphobia, Ageism, Colonialism, Misogyny, Misogynoir or Fatphobia.
